Attending a flight school is expensive with costs originating from tuition, aircraft rental, fuel, and exam fees. Most flight schools offer unintegrated courses, therefore the minimum flight hours required will be 50 more than a university with an integrated course. Learning to become a pilot is also a time commitment as recovering financially may take a while after obtaining the necessary certifications. Some of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) certifications that can be obtained through a flight school include: Recreational Pilot License (RPL): allows you to fly light, single-engine aircraft as the pilot in command, without supervision. Private Pilot License (PPL): command or co-pilot an aircraft in a private operation. Commercial Pilot License (CPL): earn money by flying an aircraft such as air taxi services, flight instruction, aerial work, or other commercial operations. However, there is limitations on number of passengers, aircraft type and crew size. Air transport pilot licence (ATPL): command any commercial aircraft including passenger jets, cargo planes, and other commercial aircraft for airlines. Instrument Rating (IR): enables flying in adverse weather conditions. Multi-crew cooperation (MCC): allows you to command or co-pilot an aircraft in coordination with other pilots. Multi-Engine Command Instrument Rating (MECIR): for multi-engine aircraft. Single Engine Command Instrument Rating (SECIR): for single-engine planes. Passenger rating: allows you to fly with passengers. Instructor rating: permits you to teach students to the equivalent of your license level. Beyond this you will need to accumulate ratings for specific aircraft.
