In a startling discovery, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) intercepted and seized two shipments of ketamine—a potent dissociative anaesthetic hallucinogen. The illicit drug was concealed within innocent-looking children’s toys. The 10 kilograms of ketamine were part of two shipments bound for Miami, Florida, originating from London. CBP officers inspected the cargo, revealing multiple packages containing a “crystallised white substance.” Lab tests confirmed it was indeed ketamine. Ketamine is a powerful anaesthetic used in medical settings but also notorious as a recreational drug. Ketamine is employed as an anaesthetic during surgeries and medical procedures. Its dissociative properties induce a state of sedation, immobility, and amnesia. Outside of medical contexts, ketamine takes on a darker role. Users experience detachment from their environment and pain, often leading to hallucinations. Tragically, it’s also used to facilitate sexual assaults. CBP officers play a critical role in safeguarding American communities from dangerous substances. Their training and vigilance enable them to detect and halt smuggling schemes. In this case, their swift action prevented ketamine from reaching its intended destination. On average, CBP officers across the country seize a staggering 1.3 tonne of drugs every day.
